During my undergraduate years at the Bombay University, I was fascinated by how humans develop from conception to adulthood (although I started losing interest once I got past the childhood phase). I decided to go against my family’s tradition of pursuing the sciences to explore the field of education. After working in a classroom environment with typically developing toddlers, I felt the need to delve deeper into a field I had begun to love. This need and yearning for further exploration is what brought me to the United States of America to attain a graduate degree in Early Childhood Special Education.
I have worked in early intervention in for the last seven years. These years have helped strengthen my belief that in spite of the differences in socio-economic status, geographical location, cultural practices and level of delay, early intervention services provide the opportunity to level the playing field for our children, helping them to reach their maximum potential. In the last five years, I have enjoyed reaching out to families in the Midlands area through my work at Bright Start and seeing children get closer to their goals week after week.
On a personal note, after spending several years in Bombay (India), Greensboro, NC and Philadelphia, I have called Columbia “home” for the past five years with my husband and daughter.
